THE PROXIMITY OF THE HYPOTHALAMUS TO THE AMYGDALA, AND HIPPOCAMPUS

As noted in chapter 1, the hypothalamus, the mainly subcortical amygdala, also the allocortical hippocampus are generally considered core limbic structures. However, in the higher mammalian hemisphere these structures are not in close proximity to each other, although they are united by a rich neural interface.

Even a cursory examination of the amphibian hemisphere (which serves as a representative of the ancestral vertebrate hemisphere), see figure 2.2, suggests the close proximity of these neural structures that once prevailed in a long extinct ancestor. The pathways mapped by the stria terminalis, stria medullaris, also the fornix, maintain ancestral relationships and serve as maps, recapitulating evolutionary pathways.
